It’s hard to say exactly whether Netflix’s new animated version of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic is suitable for very young children responding to sensory overload or junkie college students seeking sensory overload.

Either way, Scrooge: A Christmas Carol delivers it in spades, providing a turbocharged rendition of the tale aimed at maximum visual impact. A very loose remake of the 1970 live-action musical Scrooge starring Albert Finney, this version also includes songs from that film composed by two-time Academy Award winner Leslie Bricusse.

Director Stephen Donnelly has promised to deliver “psychedelic, musical, and time-travel surprises” in yet another iteration of the oft-dramatized tale, and he keeps his word, for better or for worse. The film’s vibrant animation (the opening sequence shows London as colorful as ever) feels more Hanna-Barbera than Dickensian. And it soon becomes downright mind-blowing in its frenetic sci-fi visuals that show Scrooge leaping from one time dimension to another, often with supernatural elements.

The style of the film could shake the sensibilities of younger viewers. On the other hand, this Scrooge has an adorable dog, so that’s about it, although it’s hard to imagine him shelling out his hard-earned cash to feed it. An excellent cast was assembled, starting with Luke Evans as Scrooge with appropriately white hair but a soft enough face to suggest he’s had Botox. The Welsh actor does well in the role, using his vast musical experience on stage for his songs to his advantage. But when

Jonathan Pryce shows up as a truly terrifying Jacob Marley, you find yourself thinking how awesome Scrooge would have been. Academy Award winner Olivia Colman voices a particularly jolly Ghost of Christmas Past, though her character, with an oversized candle atop her head, looks more like she belongs in Beauty and the Beast. .

All the ghostly characters are exaggeratedly portrayed. The giant ghost of the Christmas present, accompanied by tiny winged alien-like minions, is reminiscent of another Disney musical. Explosively voiced by Trevor Dion Nicholas, he plays as the genius of Aladdin, a role Nicholas played in the London production. The Ghost of Christmas Future plays out in full horror mode, with the silent, brooding specter sporting glowing eyes (there’s so much fire on display at any moment that the film seems designed for budding young arsonists) and Scrooge descending on what appears to be the bowels from hell.

It’s actually too much, and the constant tonal shifts from sort of demonic fantasy to bouncy musical numbers are more than a little jarring. It doesn’t help that neither song is particularly memorable. (Anyone remember “Happiness,” “I like life,” or “Christmas Children” from the 1970 movie? I didn’t think so.) There are some great moments, particularly when Scrooge visits his past and meets his long-lost love Isabel (Jessie Buckley). ), in this version the daughter of Mr. Fezziwig (James Cosmo). Overall, Scrooge is portrayed more sympathetically than usual, making his transition to Christmas cheer at the end of the story less impactful.

This is certainly no caroler for purists, and the over-the-top animation, while undeniably imaginative, could prove off-putting to those not yet at their sugar high. But it does provide a decent enough introduction to the story for younger viewers who will hopefully transition into more subtle takes on the classic tale. The film is dedicated to Bricusse, who passed away last year.
