NFO: – The film serves as a sequel to the 2020 film “Enola Holme” and is based on the “Nancy Springer” young adult fiction series of the same name!

Enola Holmes 2 movie review: Millie Bobby Brown’s fascinating series is a jewel in Netflix’s tainted crown

Enola Holmes 2 Movie Review: It’s encouraging to see Netflix and Millie Bobby Brown’s energetic franchise retain their appeal in the face of the more masculine (and considerably worse) Red Notice and Gray Man movies that the streamer is betting big on.

Consistently surprising, thematically rich, and aided by an energetic central performance that elevates some of the slower parts, Enola Holmes 2 is the rare sequel that doesn’t go the way of bigger is better. Instead, it doubles up on what made the first film such a breath of fresh air from the pandemic era in the first place.

Netflix likely knew they had a hit on their hands when the first movie was released, which quickly put the sequel on the fast track. Sure, we’ll probably have even more Red Notice and Gray Man movies, but they feel more like an inevitable disease that comes with old age rather than an exciting Sunday plan that looks forward to during the week.

Unlike the other Fleabag clones, Enola Holmes 2 doesn’t draw its contemporary twist from a punk rock soundtrack or random Generation Z dialogue. Instead, the film’s actuality is embedded in the plot, which is about a criminal conspiracy and a couple of whistleblowers who come out to expose it. But the most impressive thing about this ingenious sequel is its resolute clarity of conscience. In this sense, she is very similar to her brave heroine.

Millie Bobby Brown is as radiant as ever the young titular detective, who, after a series of setbacks in her career, finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery. To her chagrin, she discovers that she, and not an earl twisting his mustache, is the prime suspect. The plot thickens as the film progresses, of course, but reduced to its essence, this is the story of a young woman, plagued by the insecurity of being expendable, who investigates the disappearance of another expendable young woman. From the dizzying opening moments that basically function as a much-needed summary of “what happened before”, to its gleeful third act, Enola Holmes 2 embraces its core themes with the ferocity of Eudoria Holmes about to say goodbye to her one. daughter. A minor film would have some character announcing their mission to the public at regular intervals, because a minor film would have made the grave mistake of believing that the public was not smart enough to keep up. But Enola Holmes expresses her themes of oppression and seeks independence from her, through the character and not the plot.

Yes, it includes a scene where a group of liberated young women organize a mass strike, but it also includes a belated revelation which is as good an act of disorientation as you might hope for in what is essentially a children’s film. I can’t spoil it here, but it involves introducing a popular character from the Sherlock Holmes lore, which might seem like a trivial complacency, but in the hands of writer Jack Thorne, it feels consistent with the discreet anger running through the film’s veins. That said, keep your eyes peeled for a mid-credits scene that actually provides fan service, but again, in a way that enriches the characters.

Speaking of Sherlock Holmes, he remains a supportive presence in this film as he was in the last, although both his relationship with his younger sister and his individual personality are significantly developed. Henry Cavill’s performance exudes a warmth that you wouldn’t normally associate with the famous clinical character; this version of Holmes isn’t the type to get excited about the arrival of a new villain, but instead treats his responsibility to bring them to justice almost like a burden. There is a stoic lone wolf quality to Cavill’s Holmes that the film recognizes and seeks to heal. Cynicism is not something you can accuse of any of these films.

Watching the last third of Enola Holmes 2 is pure joy, despite director Harry Bradbeer’s messy handling of the showdown (when he forgets for a moment that Sherlock is also present because he intended to focus the spotlight on Enola). This is when the central mystery is solved with the satisfying thud of a finished book at once, and also when the film gleefully unmasks the main villain.

Both Cavill and Brown have spent most of their careers lounging in franchises. This isn’t ideal, but that’s the sad reality of stardom these days. Unless, of course, you are Leonardo DiCaprio. However, it is encouraging to see that between the vast dystopia of the DCEU and the MonsterVerse, The Witcher and Stranger Things, there is at least one series that doesn’t know what the Russo brothers think cinema is. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts, because it’s not hard to understand where everything is headed.

Starring : Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, David Thewlis, Louis Partridge, Helena Bonham Carter, Susan Wokoma, Adeel Akhtar, And Sharon Duncan-Brewster
