Review – After Bobby’s Waltair Veerayya with tepid Venky Mama, Chiranjeevi, Shruti Haasan, Ravi Teja, Katherine Tresa, Bobby Simha and Prakash Raj, this seems to be the best release ever.
The movie is a mixed bag, but for the most part it keeps you on your toes. “. A police officer (Rajendra Prasad) witnesses something so brutal in Maredumalli that he cannot accept it. He approaches Viraya in the hope that he can do what even the law cannot do. Obviously she needs the money, she agrees. The target is Solomon Caesar (Bobby Simha), the brother of fearsome drug lord Michael (Prakash Raj), but what other reasons would Viraya accept?
Waltair Veeraya doesn’t take himself too seriously, and neither do we. The film is filled with characters that don’t seem to be on the surface. As the film progresses through the masala formula of dialogue, fights, and song, Bobby slowly peels back the layers of secrets these characters hide. None of them are what they seem on the surface. The first half of the film is mostly funny and not serious at all. Even when Viraya and his gang head to Malaysia on a mission, no one seems to focus enough. The stakes are high, but not high enough. But just before the break, everything changes.
The tone changes during the lines and laughs later in the film. ACP Vikram Sagar (Ravi Teja) is introduced and things get a little more serious as the film progresses. That’s the problem with the movie. It’s important that the film is serious in some parts, but doesn’t sit well in the lighter parts. However, the film swings between the two to a silly, over-the-top climax. It also doesn’t help that scenes are cut short or casually reduced to pointless duets with Atidhi (Shruti Haasan), which seems to serve the purpose of her story until she’s ruled out.
There are enough highlights in the film, but the story is nothing new. Chiranjeevi seems to enjoy Viraya. His coastal accent is more caricatured than authentic, but his comedic timing (especially when referring to Jara Mitaya) and body language fit the part well. He also seems to enjoy kicking Boss Party and Poonakalu Loading, and so do we. Ravi Teja has a significant role and he did it with ease. It fits perfectly with the history of masala.
The rest of the cast including Shruti, Katherine, Prakash Raj and Bobby are at their best in what it has to offer. DSP background music and cinematography by Arthur Wilson complement Bobby’s direction well.
Waltair Veerayya might not make you feel poonakalu as promised, but that’s okay, especially if you’re a fan of Chiranjeevi or Ravi Teja. Don’t expect anything extraordinary.
