“Trial By Fire” – A Netflix Original Indian Hindi-Language Historical Tragedy Legal Drama Limited Series – S1 (7 Episodes) – Captures the heartbreaking journey of parents Neelam (Rajshri Deshpande) and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy (Abhay Deol), who lost their two children to the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire in Delhi. Trial by Fire review: Netflix series based on 1997 Uphaar tragedy is a triumphant reminder of the cost of resilience

Trial by Fire Review: Led by a flawless performance by Rajshri Deshpande, Trial by Fire, based on the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy, is penetratingly raw and intimate.

In June 1997, a fire broke out at the Uphaar cinema in Delhi, killing 59 innocent people who were there to watch JP Dutta’s Border. No responsibility, however, on the part of the culprits for this man-made tragedy, which hides a tacit agreement between ownership and management. Among the victims were Unnati and Ujjwal, sons of Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, whose lives would be changed forever as they fought for justice in a system where nothing can change overnight. Trial by Fire, the new Netflix series created by Prashant Nair and Randeep Jha, details this real-life tragedy which turns into a struggle of people against the system, which refuses to take the blame.

It will take Krishnamoorthy’s two decades, and more. Based on the titular memoirs of Shekhar and Neelam Krishnamoorthy, Trial By Fire begins its story on the day of the tragedy and takes shape over the years. This is a story that spans decades, juxtaposed between the crossroads of personal tragedy and systemic abandonment. Civil lawsuits, court cases, and countless verdicts are piling up. When a story goes this far and this deep, where do you draw the line?

Trial by Fire begins resolutely by putting the spotlight on the Krishnamoorthys. We see the events unfold through the perspective of Neelam (Rajshri Deshpande) and Shekhar (Abhay Deol), who decide that they want to file a police complaint against the culprits, who are the Ansal brothers, the owners of Uphaar and almost half of the infrastructure in Delhi in the late 90s.

The first two episodes examine the immediate pattern of events revealing that this is going to be an uphill battle. From the third episode onwards, Trial By Fire opens up to supporting characters, parallel timelines, and shifting perspectives that lie bruised by tragedy years later. What works so triumphantly about Trial by Fire is the way the writing uncharacteristically allows its viewers to stay focused on the lives ravaged by tragedy.

Trial by Fire is a show about the power and cost of resilience. As Neelam and Sekhar uncover the smallest clues and gather evidence to fight for justice, we see two people whose lives will never be the same again. Trial by Fire never feels the need to sensationalize their lives as seen through the many interviews given on TV with great moments filled with dialogue. Rather, Nair is interested in bringing to light the quieter moments of loss and despair that can never be expressed. Later, in a scene where Neelam and Sekhar visit a friend’s house and watch their son grow up, the devastation in their eyes requires no further signaling.

Penetratingly raw and intimate, Trial by Fire also dares to deliver some narrative twists. Even if not all of them land where they should. There is the dried fruit trader Suri (a very good Ashish Vidyarthi) who serves the managers and bribes the families of the victims to stay away from the association. A Nice Detour focuses on a retired captain and wife (played by Anupam Kher and Ratna Pathak Shah) whose lives are traced back to tragedy, but the digression ultimately feels forced. Meanwhile, there is Umesh (Shardul Bharadwaj), in debt and constantly on the run, whose character falls short of the narrative’s ambition.

Then comes the biggest move of all, in episode 6, where a decade is sliced into the interiors of a small cabin belonging to the technician working that day in Uphaar, Veer Singh (the ever-reliable Rajesh Tailang). Coupled with Soumyananda Sahi’s stunning cinematography and editing by Daniel Hajlang, these Trial by Fire sequences are incredibly powerful.

Abhay Deol is quite effective as a man whose tenacity and unrestrained support for his wife are undermined at the slightest gesture. He knows there’s no escape once the years pass, but he won’t give up. Collect your resources in parts and places. Except for the brief encounter with an old friend that takes the form of a drunken detour akin to DevD territory, Deol delivers a finely tuned performance. However, even with the many twists and turns the narrative takes along the way, Trial By Fire shines the most when the framing is based on Rajshri Deshpande. Like Neelam, Deshpande is so magnetic and believable that it seems like nothing in the world should matter when she makes a case for her.

There is a silent reflection on the anger and frustration of a grieving mother that simmers inside Neelam over the years, which only works as an attention grabbing hook in later episodes. Most of the time, she’s aware of what’s happening in the room before anyone else. Note the precision in his delivery of “parvah kijiye”, to the lawyer who is eager to nibble on his egg roll instead of delving into the opposition’s case. His performance is perfect. Trial by Fire is an urgent and important work that compels viewers to sit up and take stock of a decade-long tragedy that has gone from one verdict to another. Rather than piecing together the judgments and calculations of a courtroom investigative thriller, this is a heartbreaking, controlled drama that looks back to wonder what has changed.

In the latest episode, when he finally returns to the tragedy unfolding in real time, you dare not look away. In a system that manipulates and manipulates the truth to ignore the underprivileged, what is the cost of hope? In a man-made tragedy of such devastating proportions, is resilience the only key to resolution? Question Trial by Fire, returning to that elegant fourth-wall-breaking shot of Deshpande’s piercing gaze: the answers to these questions.
