Review of the film “Thai Massage”: funny and touching, but overall unimpressive
Plot: Atmaram Dubey is a respected widower from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh who turns 70 in two days. As his family prepares for his grand birthday celebration, they uncover the secret of his antics in Thailand. Was it a journey for sensory pleasure or is there more to it than meets the eye?
Overview: Life for the elderly can be lonely, especially after the death of a spouse. They are often denied pleasure, especially sexual pleasure, and are expected to live a quiet life, preferably a life dedicated to the gods. The film highlights this aspect through Atmaram Dubey (Gajraj Rao) whose age is irrelevant to his desire for sex.
A respectable 70-year-old loses her wife after 22 years of devotion to her while battling paralysis. Lonely and frustrated, he realizes that he may have erectile dysfunction (ED) and cannot indulge carnality, and decides to end his life. But Santulan (Divyendu), a young stranger, convinces him by saying that there is a solution to every problem. Thus begins a fun-seeking saga that takes Atmaram to Bangkok with the help of Santulan.
The premise may remind one of the veteran actor`s earlier outing, Badhai Ho, where the family thinks it`s unbecoming of senior citizens to have children or sex. Since it`s about physical pleasure, Aatmaram`s actions seem more outrageous in Thai Massage. Highlighting that he`s a principled man, the film also portrays our tendency to equate respectability and abstinence.
Even though the concept and thought are commendable, and director Mangesh Hadawle captures the essence of a sleepy town, Ujjain, and its residents` mentality skillfully, the film lacks tautness. At more than 122 minutes, the narrative becomes long-drawn and sluggish and is low on the quirk quotient that other movies of this vein have. There are funny episodes. Atmaram’s neighbor catches him watching pornographic movies because he doesn’t know how to turn off his computer and blames his young grandson. His flight to Bangkok and his communication with fellow travelers also evoke laughter.
The second half takes viewers to Bangkok, which is particularly beautifully portrayed at Phuket’s Khao Sok Lake, where Atmaram travels with a Russian blogger. The scenic spots will make your jaw drop. Gajraj’s show impresses again with his mastery of the comical and emotional scenes. Divyendu is also good at his job, but his personality is underdeveloped. He does not pass himself off as being lazy or sensitive, and his motives or urges to help Atmaram are preposterous. Santulan gives the old man his passport, smartphone and girlfriend for “boom-boom”, but says it’s a prank and seems to defend the latter.
Rajpal Yadav makes a cameo appearance which is supposed to be entertaining, but fails and doesn’t advance the story in any way. Thai massage has poignant moments, especially when Atmaram explains to his son or reminisces about his young wife and his equation with the Russian traveler. You can enjoy it intermittently, but the overall movie is underwhelming.
