Jung-E movie review: Train to Busan director’s new Netflix action film is a slick and sentimental surprise

Jung_E Film Review: Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho returns to familiar themes in his imaginatively set dystopian action film, out now on Netflix.

Like an anime with Isaac Asimov’s hands all over it, the new Korean action film Jung_E has director Yeon Sang-ho playing to his strengths. Best known for the blockbuster Train to Busan, which only found new fans on Netflix in the years since its release in 2016, director Yeon is an expert at fusing the excitement of the witty genre with heartfelt sentimentality.

But he’s not particularly good at exposition, at least on Jung_E, his third project for the streamer. Yeon handles it like a child being presented with a serving of boiled vegetables before the promised pizza. Get it out of the way as soon as possible, before slowing down and savoring the flavors you like best. In just the first minute, we’re told that the film is set in the not-too-distant future, where climate change has ravaged the Earth and large sections of humanity have been evacuated to space “havens.” Over the years, three of these havens have split into factions and separated from the larger group, posing a challenge to each other and to what is left of humanity on Earth.

Fully aware that I wasn’t keeping up with the setup reels Yeon had just unveiled, I was forced to rewind the opening twice. It’s an inelegant start to a stripped-down experience. Central to the resistance against these rebel havens is a terminally ill scientist named Seohyun, whose mother was an elite soldier who was killed in war when Seohyun was just a baby. Now an emotionally withdrawn adult, Seohyun’s only mission is to clone his dead mother using artificial intelligence and create an army from her consciousness.

The hope is that if her mother was able to lead the charge once, she might do it again. And this time she would have clones of herself fighting alongside her. Again, it’s a pretty dense premise, made more complicated by the way it’s set up. But the film is greatly enhanced when Yeon, who also wrote it, places herself at the center of the family drama. Like Train to Busan and its superhero film Psychokinesis (we’ll ignore the existence of Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula), Jung_E is, at heart, also a story about parenthood. But this film not only has a female lead, it is also presented from the boy’s point of view.

Seohyun’s attempts to clone her mother by repeatedly having her participate in a simulation of the skirmish that killed her could cynically be read as an attack by her against her mother for feeling abandoned by her. Seohyun tests his “mother” over and over again, like in a video game, under the guise of honing his fighting skills. Alternatively, these experiments, which are actually shot as video game-inspired action scenes that might remind you of Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow, could also be interpreted as Seohyun’s way of connecting with his dead mother by creating sentient replicas of her. . Either way, it works, even if the film’s feeble attempts at critiquing capitalism don’t.

And a big part of the reason the mother-daughter storyline is so effective is because Seohyun doesn’t have all the time in the world; she is dying Although the film is set against the backdrop of an intergalactic battle, director Yeon makes the wise decision to focus on the stakes with humans. The drama escalates even further when you consider that star Kang Soo-yeon, who plays Seohyun, died of a brain hemorrhage before the film’s release. Jung_E is dedicated to her memory, and her decision to cast Seohyun as a walking dead woman is almost too cruelly prescient to contemplate.
