Gulu Gulu Movie Review: Dark comedies typically focus on bizarre, nonsensical humor without universally appealing themes, such as love, kindness, and acceptance. But this is where Rathna Kumar’s Gulu Gulu stands out, which tries to infuse all of this into a comedy of errors. The basic idea and intent is fair enough, but does it all hold together? Gulu Gulu revolves around the life of a nomad (Santhanam),
who knows everything and has traveled extensively, gaining immense life experience in the process. He is the type of person who knows 13 languages and would not refuse if anyone asked him for help. That’s why it is aptly named as Google. But just like the search engine, sometimes it ends up giving wrong results, creating havoc.
Gulu Gulu introduces us to various characters and how all their lives are woven into one. First we see Matilda, who has come from France to see her father at least once. Matilda’s half-brothers are furious at her return and want to kill her. At the same time, a group of four friends hatch a plan to kidnap one of their own to find out if his kidnapped father really loves him. However, the plan goes awry and they seek help from Google.
While all of these characters come together for a fun-filled journey, some seek redemption, acceptance and peace. Gulu Gulu is interesting when it comes to her writing. Each character in the story has their own uniqueness and it feels like the story has been woven around them. This works for and against the film. The film is ambitious in terms of ideas, but it is important to analyze whether these cause laughter on the screen, especially in the case of a dark humor film. It’s funny in parts, but fails in several places as it desperately tries to balance emotion and humor.
As individual scenes, some of them are really good, but as films they don’t feel that wholesome and just make the script look messy. The most effective aspects of the film are the background music and songs of Santhosh Narayanan.
They take the film to another level despite the disappointing sequences in the second half. Santhanam’s performance as a nomad is quite impressive and none of his traits resemble his previous works. His character arc is fresh and audiences are made to ride with him. The scene where he helps a woman on the street and then asks for trouble is superb and builds a perfect mass sequence.
Pradeep Rawat’s character as a menacing villain is powerful and he has done a decent job. Lollu Sabha Maaran’s jokes and George Maryan’s performance playing one of the kidnappers keep the audience engaged here and there.
